# Transfer Chats to Local

> Continue a Blocks session in a local coding agent, ChatGPT, or any other assistant

## Overview

Any Blocks session can be handed off to a local agent. This involves prompting the agent to install our [official skills](https://github.com/BlocksOrg/skills) and giving it a reference to the session ID.

<Tip>
  **Like this feature?** Star the [Blocks skills repo](https://github.com/BlocksOrg/skills) and email us at [dev@blocksorg.com](mailto:dev@blocksorg.com) once you have. We'd be happy to grant you **500 compute minutes** or **\$5.00 in LLM credits** as a thank you.
</Tip>

## Transfer a chat

Paste the following prompt into your agent, replacing `YOUR_SESSION_ID` and `YOUR_BLOCKS_API_KEY`:

```markdown theme={null}
{Your prompt, what you want to do with the chat}
<session_id>{YOUR_SESSION_ID}</session_id>
<api_key>{YOUR_BLOCKS_API_KEY}</api_key>
> Install the Blocks skills if they are not available: using the skills CLI as specified in https://github.com/BlocksOrg/skills
```

Or get the prompt from the dashboard:

1. Open the session in the dashboard
2. Click the **⋯** menu in the session header and choose **Transfer Chat**
3. Pick one of the options in the dialog:
   * **Open in** Claude, Codex, Cursor, or Zed. The app opens with the prompt already filled in.
   * **Copy the prompt** and paste it into any other agent or assistant, such as Claude Code or Codex in a terminal, ChatGPT, or a custom tool.

You can replace `Get the session overview for the Blocks Session:` with your own prompt of what you want to do with the chat.

## What gets transferred

Blocks pulls the overview of the session, including user and agent messages and any plan files that were created, and optionally pulls in more information about the session such as tool calls.

## Install the skills

Agents that can run shell commands install the skills on their own when they see the prompt. To install them ahead of time:

```bash theme={null}
npx skills add https://github.com/BlocksOrg/skills --all --global
```

## API key and security

The prompt contains a **managed workspace API key**. Blocks creates it the first time anyone in the workspace opens the Transfer Chat dialog and rotates it automatically, so you never need to create or paste a key yourself.

* The key is scoped to your workspace and only grants REST API access
* Treat the prompt like a secret. Do not post it in public channels
* Because the key rotates, a prompt copied earlier may stop working. Open **Transfer Chat** again to get a fresh one
